Summary:

India's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) policy is encouraging global laptop manufacturers such as Asus, HP, and MSI to shift production from China to India. Driven by escalating US-China trade tensions, this strategic shift benefits India’s manufacturing sector and ecosystem. Indian enterprises are attracting global partners by offering competitive tariffs and skilled labor. Meeting PLI targets also enables eligibility for government procurement. Currently, India offsets 10–20% of laptop imports, which totaled ₹93,687 crore in FY24.

Asus, in collaboration with VVDN Technologies, has established a manufacturing line in Manesar that produces one laptop every 240 seconds. MSI has partnered with Syrma SGS for local production. Dixon Technologies is investing ₹1,000 crore in a new facility in Tamil Nadu to manufacture laptops for HP, Lenovo, and Asus. The second phase of India’s PLI scheme, launched on May 29, 2023, allocates ₹17,000 crore over six years, offering a 5% incentive on incremental domestic sales.
