Summary:
On the eve of World Intellectual Property Day, NASSCOM released its report, Patent Pulse 2025, highlighting India’s progress in the AI patent landscape. India is now the fifth-largest patent filer globally, with its patent-to-GDP ratio increasing 2.6 times since 2013. In FY24, approximately 90,000 patents were filed, and 100,000 were granted. Resident filers contributed 55%, underscoring the growing role of SMEs and educational institutions.
Between 2010 and 2025, India filed around 86,000 AI patents, representing over 25% of its total technology patents. AI patent filings grew sevenfold between 2021 and 2025, compared to the period from 2010 to 2015. Machine Learning dominates, accounting for 55% of AI patents, while Generative AI (GenAI) makes up 50% of ML-related filings. Despite this growth, India’s AI patent grant rate remains low at 0.37%, and the grant rate for educational institutions is barely 1%.
