Summary:

India, recognized as the world's leading milk producer, has set an ambitious target to boost milk production from the current 239 million metric tons (MMT) to 300 MMT within the next five years. This objective was announced by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Mr. Rajeev Ranjan Singh, during a Lok Sabha session. Since the initiation of the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) in 2014, milk production has increased by 63.5%, with an anticipated additional growth of 15% over the next three years. Notably, 10 crore individuals are engaged in milk production, with women comprising 75% of this workforce. The average per capita milk consumption in the country is reported at 471 grams.

To achieve these goals, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying is actively implementing the RGM. This initiative is focused on developing and conserving indigenous breeds, genetically enhancing the bovine population and increasing overall milk productivity. Scheduled to run from 2021-22 to 2025-26, the program promotes sustainable productivity improvements through advanced technologies. Additionally, it supports the breeding of high genetic merit bulls, broadens the reach of artificial insemination and encourages indigenous cattle and buffalo rearing.
