Over the past five years, India's Intellectual Property (IP) registrations have increased by 44%, from 477,533 in 2020-21 to 689,991 in 2024-25. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is driving this growth through policy reforms and digital initiatives. Geographical indications (GI) increased 380%, designs 266%, patents 180%, copyright 83%, trademarks 28%, and SICLD 20%. Key revisions include simpler intellectual property legislation, obligatory e-filing, a 10% reduction in online filing fees, speedier patent review, and decreased reporting frequency. Fee discounts are beneficial to startups, MSMEs, and educational institutions. Over 95 percent of applications are now submitted online. Tools such as the IP Sarthi Chatbot and NIPAM have helped raise awareness. India has registered 697 geographical indications (GIs), with an emphasis on protecting local products.
