Summary:

Between April and January of FY25, cellphones surpassed automotive diesel fuel to become India’s top individual export by value. Smartphone exports totaled ₹1,53,774 crore (US$18.31 billion), exceeding diesel exports at ₹1,37,029.72 crore (US$16.04 billion). This surge was driven in part by global trade uncertainty following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Previously ranked as India’s fourth-largest export in FY24, smartphones saw a 54.7% increase in shipments, fueled by strong demand from the U.S.—particularly for iPhones, which surged 208% in January 2025. Exports to the U.S. rose 64%, reaching ₹56,383 crore (US$6.6 billion). Smartphone exports are projected to hit ₹2,05,032 crore in FY25, a remarkable rise from their 23rd position in FY19, while also generating over 1.3 million jobs.
