Summary:

India’s snacking industry is transitioning towards healthier alternatives, with makhana driving the trend and encouraging brand innovation, paving the way for new entries. A consumer insights research conducted by Farmley at the Indian Healthy Snacking Summit 2025, which surveyed 6,000 people, discovered that 72% choose snacks with functional advantages such as energy, mood, and protein. While 94% still prioritise flavour, 55% want preservative-free products, making "clean labels" the norm. Roasted and flavoured dried fruits are most popular (36%), followed by makhana (19%) and chips (14%). Notably, 65% consistently drink makhana, and two out of every five are prepared to pay a 20% premium for healthier alternatives. With an estimated market size of Rs. 20,000 crore by 2030, fast commerce and unique tastes are driving expansion.
