Summary:
The Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (MDoNER), in collaboration with the Assam government and the Central Silk Board, initiated Mission Senehjori with the goal of revolutionising the Muga silk sector in Assam. By fortifying the whole value chain - from farming and silkworm rearing to weaving, branding, and marketing - the program aims to create a premium, traceable, and export-focused ecosystem. Approximately 2.6 lakh families are supported by muga silk, the only naturally golden silk in the world and the first GI-tagged silk in India. The mission aims to improve infrastructure, increase incomes, and provide access to international markets with a three-year investment of ₹396 - 411 crore. Additionally, it positions Assam as a global center for luxury silk by promoting tourism through Silk Trails, Tourism Parks, and festivals.
