Summary:
The Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide campaign to make schools and colleges tobacco- and substance-free. Following the NCORD summit on May 15, 2025, the initiative aims to protect young minds from harmful substances through collaboration with law enforcement. With around 5,500 children starting tobacco use daily, the Ministry is implementing the Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions Guidelines to create a healthier environment for India’s youth.
The ToFEI guidelines include nine measures to keep schools smoke-free, such as displaying signage, promoting awareness, and banning tobacco sales within a 100-yard radius. Local authorities must support establishing these tobacco-free zones and enforcing the sales prohibition. A month-long enforcement campaign will run from May 31 to June 26, 2025. States are encouraged to develop SOPs for reporting violations. The Ministry has also launched a World No Tobacco Day quiz on MyGov to raise public awareness. Community engagement is essential for creating safe learning environments.
