Summary:
Since its inception in 2016, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has grown to become the largest real-time payment platform in the world, accounting for almost half of all instantaneous transactions worldwide. It developed into the foundation of India's digital economy, encouraging smooth payments and financial inclusion across the country. It increased dramatically from 373 transactions at first to over 24,162 crore transactions in 2025–2026. The value of the transaction increased from Rs. 0.07 lakh crore to Rs. 314 lakh crore. The average daily activity is 66 crore transactions. With the help of hundreds of banks, UPI currently accounts for around 85% of digital payments in India. It powers both high-value transfers and small retail payments while growing internationally, bolstering India's fintech presence, and continuing to innovate in credit, cross-border services, and the sustainable development of digital public infrastructure.
