India’s coal industry has reached a remarkable milestone, exceeding the one billion tonne threshold in cumulative production for FY25. This achievement highlights the Ministry of Coal’s dedicated efforts to boost output, optimize dispatch mechanisms and strengthen the nation’s energy security. Provisional figures indicate that total coal production in FY25 stood at 1,047.57 million tonnes (MT), reflecting a 4.99% increase from 997.83 MT in FY24. Additionally, commercial, captive and other private-sector coal production saw a significant jump, rising 28.11% to 197.50 MT (provisional) from 154.16 MT in the previous fiscal year.

Coal dispatch has also shown substantial growth, surpassing the one billion tonne mark in FY25 by reaching 1,024.99 MT (provisional), up 5.34% from 973.01 MT in FY24. Dispatches from commercial, captive and other private coal producers experienced an impressive surge of 31.39%, reaching 196.83 MT (provisional) compared to 149.81 MT in the prior year. These milestones reinforce India’s commitment to expanding domestic coal production while enhancing distribution efficiency. The Ministry of Coal continues to focus on achieving self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports and advancing sustainable mining practices to ensure long-term energy security and economic resilience.
