Summary:
Enhancing regional connectivity and optimizing logistics efficiency, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield high-speed National Highway. With an investment of Rs. 4,500 crore (US$ 521.50 million), this 29.219-kilometer highway will connect Chowk in Maharashtra to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) Port in Pagote. Implemented under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) model, the project is a critical component of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The increasing container traffic at JNPA Port, alongside the future demands expected with the Navi Mumbai International Airport, highlights the urgent need for this infrastructure development.
At present, urban congestion at locations such as Panvel, Kalamboli Junction, D-Point and Palaspe Phata leads to significant delays of two to three hours for vehicles traveling from JNPA Port to the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) section of NH-48 and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Once completed, the highway will provide a seamless, direct route to accelerate freight movement and drastically reduce travel time. Beginning at JNPA Port (NH-348) in Pagote village, the alignment will conclude at the Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-48), establishing strong connectivity with both the MumbaiPune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66). Additionally, the inclusion of two tunnels through the Sahyadri range will enable the smooth transit of large container trucks. By bolstering trade activities within the Mumbai-Pune corridor, the project is set to stimulate regional economic development. Industries will benefit from lower transportation expenses and improved logistics infrastructure, further promoting the area’s economic growth. This significant undertaking represents a substantial stride in advancing India’s transportation network and contributing to longterm national progress.
