Summary:

With a mission to strengthen domestic solar manufacturing and boost Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) is set to create 17 lakh jobs while cutting 720 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Over the next 25 years, the initiative is expected to generate 1,000 billion units of electricity, increase solar capacity by 30 GW and save the government Rs. 75,000 crore (US$ 8.60 billion) annually. As the government strives to solarpower one crore homes by FY27, Gujarat, leading with 3.51 lakh solar-powered households (18.14%), is followed by Maharashtra (1.92 lakh, 22.79%), Uttar Pradesh (75,602, 8.69%), Kerala (65,423, 7.73%) and Rajasthan (26,622, 3.14%).

Major contributors to the program include Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, while Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have already met 100% of their government rooftop solar targets. Making solar energy widely accessible, the initiative offers collateral-free loans of up to Rs. 2 lakh (US$ 2,296.50) at a 6.75% subsidised interest rate through 12 Public Sector Banks. Out of 3.10 lakh applications, 1.58 lakh loans have been approved and 1.28 lakh disbursed. A fast-track 15-day subsidy transfer system has further simplified the process, enabling zero electricity bills for many users. Each solar panel installation contributes to reducing carbon footprints, equivalent to planting 100 trees. So far, Rs. 4,770 crore (US$ 546.96 million) in subsidies has reached 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, following 47.3 lakh applications received nationwide. Since its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the scheme has been rapidly transforming India’s energy landscape. Reaching an impressive 10 lakh solar-powered households as of March 10, 2025, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is now the world’s largest residential rooftop solar initiative, accelerating India's shift toward clean, sustainable energy.
