Summary:

The IEA's World Energy Outlook study praises India's electrification efforts, highlighting schemes such as Saubhagya and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY). These projects revolutionized rural electricity, connecting 100 million people in 2018 alone. This accomplishment reflects the effort required to close the power gap in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. These initiatives, which focus on last-mile connectivity, ensure that power reaches unconnected households while also strengthening rural distribution networks.

The Indian government has electrified 18,374 villages under DDUGJY and connected 2.86 crore homes via Saubhagya. The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) has seen additional development, with US$ 21.70 billion (Rs. 1,85,000 crore) invested in distribution system upgrades like substations and underground cabling. This initiative targets underserved homes, particularly those from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, with US$ 35.54 billion committed to electrification and smart metering between 2021 and 2026, strengthening India's commitment to providing uninterrupted power to all households.
