Summary:

India's agriculture industry contributes 18% to the GDP and demonstrated resilience during COVID-19. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan underlined the government's commitment to boosting this sector during the Gokhale Institute's Platinum Jubilee Conference. He emphasized the importance of farmer-focused research, India's agricultural traditions, and sustainable farming techniques. Chouhan advocated for natural farming, reduced pesticide usage, and higher quality, citing India’s leadership in world unity after WWII and its emphasis on farmer welfare.

The government is focused on expanding farmers' storage capacity and creating a new plan to move agricultural products across states. Prime Minister Modi's river-linking project, launching on December 25, 2024, aims to address regional imbalances caused by floods and droughts. Initiatives such as the Modern Krishi Choupal on DD Kisan Channel promote communication among farmers, researchers, and scientists. To further assist farmers, the government provides subsidies, the Kisan Credit Card, and has increased minimum support prices, reducing dependency on imports.
