Summary:
IIT Madras has collaborated with ISRO to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for fluid and thermal science research. ISRO will provide initial funding of $218,112.8 (Rs. 1.84 crore). The CoE will focus on thermal management for launch vehicles and spacecraft, utilizing IIT Madras faculty expertise to address thermal challenges during component design, analysis, and testing.
Professor Arvind Pattamatta of IIT Madras stated that the CoE will create a unique industryacademia interface, fostering collaboration between ISRO scientists and IIT Madras professors and students. By tackling complex thermal engineering issues, the institute aims to advance India's space program and enhance self-reliance in space technology. This builds on the long-standing ISRO-IIT Madras collaboration, which began in 1985 and has supported research in spacecraft thermal management, cryo-tank thermodynamics, and combustion instability in hybrid rockets.
