Summary:

Mr. Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, set a target of 10,000 Geographical Indication (GI) Tags by 2030 at the GI Samagam in New Delhi, organized by DPIIT and the India Today Group. A government commission will oversee this initiative, building on the 605 GI tags issued so far.

He emphasized the government’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen India’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) ecosystem. Over the past decade, the number of authorized GI tag users has increased from 365 to 29,000, while the number of awarded patents has grown from 6,000 to 100,000. Modi praised state initiatives, branding improvements, and encouraged collaborations with FSSAI, BIS, GeM, ONDC, and embassies abroad to enhance GI product quality, marketing, and exports, emphasizing his vision of ‘Vikas bhi aur Virasat bhi.’
