Summary:

According to a senior industry official, India's palm oil production is likely to increase over the next six years as oil palm crops mature. As the world's top edible oil importer, India relies mainly on imports from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Domestic production aims to minimize this dependency, with output expected to rise to 1.2 to 1.5 million metric tons by 2030-31, up from around 400,000 tons, owing to expanding planted areas, according to Mr. Sougata Niyogi of Godrej Agrovet Ltd.

Oil palm trees typically begin producing fruit 3-4 years after planting, with significant increases occurring around the 6-year mark. Following government incentives in 2021, the area under oil palm cultivation increased significantly, reaching 375,000 hectares last year, with an additional 80,000 to 100,000 hectares predicted this year. India imports 16 million tons of vegetable oils annually, including 9-10 million tons of palm oil, and plans to greatly increase domestic output by 2030-31.
