Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, the initiative has expanded coverage from 3 crore to 15 crore in five years. Union Minister C.R. Patil praised the achievement, highlighting improvements in rural living. Eight states and three Union Territories have reached 100% coverage, with significant progress in Bihar and Uttarakhand. The National Jal Jeevan Mission systematically tests water from sources and distribution points, supported by 2,163 labs and 24.59 lakh trained women using Field Testing Kits (FTKs). Safe drinking water is now available in all arsenic- and fluoride-affected areas. The mission provides tap water to 9.28 lakh schools and 9.68 lakh Anganwadi centers. In 112 aspirational districts, tap water access surged from 21.38 lakh to 2.11 crore households. The ‘Har Ghar Jal’ initiative has significantly enhanced rural life by freeing women and girls from daily water-fetching duties, improving overall well-being, and empowering local communities.
