Summary:
The International Zinc Association (IZA) predicts that India's zinc consumption would approach 2 million tonnes over the next decade, up from 1.1 million tonnes now. Mr. Andrew Green, Executive Director of the IZA, stated that India's zinc demand exceeds production levels and would increase dramatically. Currently, the worldwide zinc market is at 13.5 million tonnes per year, with India's per capita consumption significantly lower than the global average.
He emphasised that, although 90-95% of the global automobile industry utilises galvanised steel for corrosion protection, India only uses about 23%. Efforts are underway to increase use in the automobile industry and set standards for galvanised rebar. India's strong economic expansion creates enormous prospects for expanded zinc use, notably in infrastructure, where corrosion costs account for about 5% of GDP, and demand for galvanised steel is predicted to surge by 2030.
