Summary:
The agriculture ministry estimates that India's rice output will reach a record 119.93 million tonnes (MT) in the 2024-25 kharif season. This represents an increase of 6.67 million tonnes over the previous year, due to favorable monsoon conditions and surplus supplies in government warehouses. Maize output is also expected to hit an all-time high of 24.54 MT, with varied results in other coarse cereals.
The government forecasts total foodgrain output for the kharif season at 164.70 MT, up from 155.76 MT last year. Pulses output is projected to remain steady at approximately 6.95 MT, while oilseed production is expected to rise to 25.74 MT. However, output for cash crops such as sugarcane, cotton, and jute/mesta is predicted to decline. The ministry also used Digital Crop Survey (DCS) data to enhance accuracy.
