To minimize the influx of sub-standard hinges and promote domestic production, the government has enforced strict quality control measures. Under the Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2025, announced by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on March 21, only hinges marked with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification will be permitted for manufacturing, sale, trade, import or storage. Starting July 1, 2025, this order will apply universally, except for domestically produced hinges designated for export and a limited allowance of up to 200 imported units per year for research and development by hinge manufacturers, which cannot be sold commercially.

Breaking the BIS Act regulations could result in a prison sentence of up to two years or a minimum fine of Rs. 2 lakh (US$ 2,333) for first-time offenders. Repeat violations will incur higher penalties, with fines starting from Rs. 5 lakh (US$ 5,834) and potentially escalating to ten times the product's value. By implementing this regulation, the government seeks to enhance quality standards, ensuring the safety of consumers and reducing environmental impact. Comparable quality control orders have previously been applied to various products, including smart meters, welding rods, cookware, fire extinguishers, electric ceiling fans and domestic gas stoves.
