Summary:

India has witnessed a remarkable 47.5% growth in fruit exports over the past five years, as per data shared by the government in the Rajya Sabha. Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Mr. Jitin Prasada, emphasized that free trade agreements with the UAE and Australia have significantly contributed to this increase, boosting fruit exports to these nations by 27% and 6%, respectively. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to upholding international quality standards by ensuring that exported fruits contain minimal pesticide residues. Among the key fruits exported are mangoes, grapes, bananas, apples, pineapples, pomegranates and watermelons.

To strengthen the fresh fruit export sector, the government has introduced multiple initiatives. These efforts include improving post-harvest management infrastructure, expanding cold chain logistics and establishing treatment facilities to mitigate pest infestations. Exporters and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) are actively encouraged to showcase their products at global trade fairs. Presently, India exports fresh fruits to more than 85 countries. Between FY20 and FY24, the value of India’s fresh fruit exports surged by 47%, rising from Rs. 5,716 crore (US$ 669 million) to Rs. 8,431 crore (US$ 986 million), while the export volume grew by 69%, increasing from 7.55 lakh metric tons (MT) to 12.76 lakh MT. Additionally, the government is prioritizing the development of sea transport protocols for perishable goods to facilitate larger export volumes at more costeffective rates.
